Optimization of Taxiway Traversal at Congested Airports

چکیده
Airport runways and taxiways have been identified as a key source of system-wide congestion and delay in the over-strained commercial air traffic system. To combat this growing problem, we present a novel approach for taxiway scheduling and traversal. Aircraft must traverse a taxiway, represented by a graph, from gates to their respective runways and arrive at their scheduled times while adhering to safety separation constraints. We describe a combinatorial mixed integer linear program to simultaneously determine the optimal pushback time windows, aircraft speeds, stopping times, and in particular, traversal paths for a given graph and an imposed flight schedule. Several scenarios are presented to demonstrate possible uses for this tool.

Coordination of scheduling decisions in the management of airport airspace and taxiway operations
This paper addresses the real-time problem of coordinating aircraft ground and air operations in an airport area. At a congested airport, airborne decisions are related to take-o↵ and landing operations, while ground (taxiway) decisions consist of scheduling aircraft movements between the gates and the runways. Since the runways are the initial/terminal points of both decisions, coordinated act...
متن کاملCollaborative Virtual Queue: Fair Management of Congested Departure Operations and Benefit Analysis
Due to the stochastic nature of departure operations, working at full capacity makes major US airports very sensitive to uncertainties. Consequently, airport ground operations face critically congested taxiways and long runway queues. In this report, we show how improved management of departure operations from the readyto-push-back time to the wheels-off time can potentially yield significant b...
متن کاملA Simulator for Modeling Aircraft Surface Operations at Airports
Rapid prototyping of integrated taxiway and runway schedulers at airports has become highly desirable for Safe and Efficient Surface Operations (SESO) to support the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). Finding optimal solutions for taxiway and runway scheduling are generally computationally difficult and therefore it is essential to develop fast algorithms that can produce high...
متن کاملAircraft Ground Traffic Optimization
Air traffic growth and especially hubs development cause new significant congestion and ground delays on major airports. Accurate models of airport traffic prediction can provide new tools to assist ground controllers in choosing the best taxiways and the most adapted holding points for aircraft. Such tools could also be used by airport designers to evaluate possible improvements on airport con...
